About

The Belgian Hospital Physicists Association (BHPA) is a non profit organization recognised as professional union that gathers medical physicists from Belgium. This Association was founded in 1978 (ID 8665/78). Its purpose is to group, to share and improve the knowledge of this specific field of Physics. Medical physics is, in general, the application of physics concepts, theories, and methods to medicine or healthcare. Medical Physics can be found in three medical departments: Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine and Radiology (medical imaging). Due to the never ending appearance of new technologies and techniques for diagnoses and treatments, quality controls and treatment quality have become the main goals of our work. Our organization wants to ensure accurate and safe use of technology and ionizing radiation in medical procedures such as radiology, nuclear medicine and radiation therapy. We are generally known as medical physicists and are uniquely qualified to link the medical doctor to the patient through the responsible use of technology in both diagnosing and treating people. The main responsibility of the medical physicist is to assure that the radiation prescribed to the patient is delivered accurately and safely.

Our Association counts about 400 members. Every Medical Physicist working in a Belgian Hospital can become an effective member. He or she needs to be recommended by two other effective members. The effective membership of candidates is voted at the General Assembly, usually held in February.

We work closely togheter with medical physics assistents on a daily basis. We strongly promote them to join the BHPA in our common interest to optimise patient care as fellow members.

We also welcome PhD students in medical physics,  foreign medical physicists or medical physicists working in private companies (developing, for example, the technologies used in hospitals, or performing QA in name of government, …), as corresponding members.

Furthermore  our organisation includes Honorary members and Master student members

Finally recognise the very important support from our Sponsors  (Associated members) to help us to support our website, and organise our yearly symposium.

For more information about the membership please visit the membership page

The Society is supervised by a Board, made of 4 to 6 effective members. These Board members are elected at the General Assembly for a two-year mandate renewable.
